Day 10 – From Interlaken to Bern and Evening Walk Through Switzerland’s Historic Capital (Sep’26)

A New Day, A New Swiss City – Leaving Wilderswil for Bern Old Town

16 September 2026

After spending some wonderful days exploring the Interlaken region, it was time to continue our Switzerland journey. On 16 September 2026, we packed our bags and left our Airbnb in Wilderswil village, near Interlaken, heading towards Bern, the beautiful capital city of Switzerland.

Every destination during this Europe trip had offered us something different. Interlaken was all about mountains, lakes, villages, and natural beauty. Bern, on the other hand, promised something completely different — historic streets, old buildings, bridges, and a traditional Swiss city atmosphere.

We took a direct train and reached Bern Railway Station around noon.

The weather was not particularly welcoming when we arrived. It was raining, and the sky was cloudy. But traveling in Switzerland had already taught us that the weather can change quickly. Fortunately, the rain stopped in the afternoon, giving us a lovely opportunity to explore the city.

Lunch at Bern Railway Station – Trying Another Swiss Vegetarian Dish

Since we arrived around lunchtime, our first priority was finding something to eat.

Bern Railway Station is more than just a place to catch trains. It is connected to shopping, restaurants, cafés, and office buildings, making it a convenient place to spend some time before heading into the city.

We found a place in the connected shopping and office complex and decided to have lunch there.

Once again, I chose to try a local Swiss vegetarian dish. Throughout my Switzerland journey, I enjoyed exploring local food whenever I had the opportunity. Trying regional dishes is one of the small experiences that makes traveling more interesting for me.

After lunch, we also enjoyed a very nice coffee.

Sometimes, a simple lunch and a good cup of coffee are exactly what you need after traveling with luggage and arriving in a new city.

By the time we finished, the weather was also improving.

3:30 PM – Traveling to Our Airbnb Near Bümplizstrasse

Around 3:30 PM, we decided to head towards our Airbnb accommodation near Bümplizstrasse in Bern.

One of the best things about our accommodation was its convenient location. Our Airbnb was only about 50 meters from the train station, which made traveling around Bern extremely easy.

After arriving, we checked in, settled our luggage, and took a short break.

What I particularly liked was that Bern city center was only about 10 minutes away by train.

This meant we could stay in a quieter residential area while still enjoying easy access to the historic city center.

And since the rain had stopped, we decided not to waste the evening indoors.

We took the train back to Bern city to explore the Old Town.

Evening Walk Through Bern Old Town – Historic Streets and Beautiful Buildings

Our evening in Bern turned out to be the most memorable part of the day.

As we started walking through Bern Old Town, I immediately noticed how different this city felt compared with the other Swiss destinations we had visited.

There were old buildings everywhere, beautiful traditional architecture, historic streets, and a charming atmosphere.

Bern has preserved much of its medieval character, and its Old Town is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We spent our time walking slowly through the streets, looking at the buildings, observing the surroundings, and taking lots of photographs.

I particularly enjoyed the long stretches of historic streets lined with old buildings.

The architecture gives Bern a unique identity. It feels like a city where modern everyday life continues inside a setting that has existed for centuries.

For me, this was the real beauty of Bern.

Seeing the Famous Zytglogge Clock Tower

One of Bern’s most recognizable landmarks

During our walk, we also came across the famous large clock in the Old Town.

This is the Zytglogge Clock Tower, one of the most iconic landmarks in Bern.

The historic clock tower stands along the old streets and immediately attracts attention because of its beautiful clock face and traditional architecture.

We stopped to admire it and take photographs.

I have seen many historic clocks during my travels, but each one has its own character. Bern’s clock tower fits perfectly into the surrounding Old Town.

It is not just a clock; it is part of the city’s history and identity.

Walking around this area was one of my favorite experiences of the evening.

Walking Along Bern’s Old Streets and Bridges

We continued our walk through the Old Town, exploring more streets and crossing a bridge.

Bern has a beautiful historic setting, with the Aare River curving around the Old Town and bridges connecting different parts of the city.

The old buildings, streets, and bridges create wonderful opportunities for photography.

We took plenty of pictures as we walked.

What I enjoyed most was that we were not rushing from one attraction to another. We were simply exploring the city at our own pace.

Sometimes, the best travel memories come from these unplanned walks.

You discover interesting corners, beautiful architecture, and small details that might be missed when following a strict sightseeing schedule.

Bern was exactly that kind of city for us.

A Visit to Albert Einstein’s Home in Bern

One of the most interesting moments during our walk through Bern Old Town was visiting Einstein House (Einsteinhaus), where the famous scientist Albert Einstein once lived. Einstein lived in Bern from 1902 to 1909, and from 1903 to 1905, he stayed in an apartment at Kramgasse 49, which is now preserved as a museum.

It was during his time in Bern that he developed some of his most important scientific ideas, including his groundbreaking work on the theory of special relativity in 1905. As we explored the historic streets, it was fascinating to discover that one of the world’s greatest scientists had once lived and worked in this beautiful city. Visiting his former home added a special historical and educational experience to our evening walk.

Bern was already impressing me with its old buildings, clock tower, and charming streets, but discovering this connection to Albert Einstein made our visit even more memorable.

Dinner in Bern Old Town – A Relaxing Evening

After spending time walking and taking photographs, we decided to have dinner in the Old Town.

By evening, Bern had a lovely atmosphere. The rain from earlier in the day was no longer a problem, and we could comfortably enjoy our time outside.

Having dinner surrounded by historic buildings made the evening feel special.

We enjoyed our meal and relaxed after a day that had included train travel, changing accommodation, and exploring a new destination.

It was a satisfying way to end our first day in Bern.

Discovering Simmentaler Bar Near the Station

Another small discovery during our visit was a bar called Simmentaler near the station.

I always find it interesting to notice local cafés, bars, and small businesses while exploring a new city.

These places are part of the everyday character of a destination, beyond its famous tourist attractions.

Simmentaler was one of the names that caught our attention during our time in Bern.

It added another small memory to our day of discovering the city.

Returning to Our Airbnb After a Wonderful Day

After dinner and our evening walk, we took the train back towards our Airbnb near Bümplizstrasse.

Once again, the convenient train connection made the journey easy.

Within about 10 minutes, we were back in the area where we were staying, and our accommodation was only a short walk from the station.

Looking back, it had been a very enjoyable day.

We started in Wilderswil, arrived in Bern during the rain, tried another Swiss vegetarian dish, enjoyed coffee, checked into a new Airbnb, and spent the evening exploring one of Switzerland’s most beautiful historic city centers.

Although we had only spent part of the day sightseeing, Bern left a lovely impression on me.
