In late October 2024, I had the pleasure of celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights, in Dehradun, India. This experience allowed me to immerse myself in the rich cultural traditions and festive spirit that define this auspicious occasion.
To kick off the festivities, I embarked on a scenic drive from Dehradun to Mussoorie, a popular hill station known for its breathtaking views and colonial charm. The journey through winding roads, surrounded by lush greenery and the Himalayan foothills, was a refreshing escape from the city’s hustle.
In October 2024, I had the opportunity to visit the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, India. Established in 1906, FRI is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious institutions dedicated to forestry research and education.
The FRI campus spans over 500 hectares and is renowned for its Greco-Roman and Colonial architecture, particularly the main building completed in 1929. This architectural marvel stands as a testament to India’s rich colonial heritage and is a major tourist attraction in Dehradun.

Day 2 – Travel Memories in Jaipur, India
My day began with a visit to the City Palace, a sprawling complex established in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. The palace’s courtyards and intricate buildings, showcasing a blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European architectural styles, narrate tales of Jaipur’s regal past. The Chandra Mahal, a seven-story structure still inhabited by the royal family, and the Mubarak Mahal, now a textile museum, were particularly captivating.

My adventure began with a stay at the Umaid Mahal – Bani Park Hotel, a beautifully restored 18th-century heritage property. The hotel’s intricate décor and special glass artwork provided a regal ambiance, setting the tone for my explorations.

Day 9 & 10 – Dehradun to Delhi Airport, India
After a hearty breakfast around 11 AM, I began my journey from Dehradun to Delhi Airport. The road distance is approximately 240 kilometers, and the journey typically takes around 5–6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
During the drive, I stopped at Cheetal Grand Restaurant for lunch. This popular roadside eatery is known for its clean facilities and a variety of North Indian dishes, making it a convenient and comfortable stop for travelers.
In November 2023, we embarked on a memorable two-day journey to Rishikesh, India, accompanied by my brother’s family. Situated approximately an hour’s drive from Dehradun, Rishikesh is renowned for its spiritual ambiance, yoga retreats, and the majestic Ganges River.

My day began with a visit to Nunawala Gurudwara, a serene Sikh place of worship near Dehradun. The peaceful ambiance and the community’s warmth provided a profound spiritual experience. After the prayers, I partook in the ‘Langar,’ a traditional communal meal offered to all visitors, regardless of background. The simple yet flavorful food was a testament to the Gurudwara’s hospitality.
In November 2023, I returned to my hometown of Dehradun, India, to celebrate Diwali with my family. The festivities began with Choti Diwali, where we adorned our home with traditional decorations and illuminated it with diyas, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. The vibrant markets of Dehradun were abuzz with activity, offering a plethora of festive items that added to the excitement of the season.
