On a weekday in December 2019, I set out to explore 9 local places in Bangkok — not the usual tourist landmarks, but neighbourhood spots, hidden gems and everyday scenes that give you a deeper feel for the city. From quiet alleys to vibrant local markets, eclectic community spaces and offbeat hangouts, these nine places showed me a different side of Bangkok — one that’s lived, local and richly textured. In this guide, I’ll walk you through each place I visited, how to reach them, what makes them special and tips for planning your own local Bangkok experience.

11th November 2019 / I visited Wat Saket Golden Mountain Temple (Phukhao Thong) in Bangkok, Thailand on the day of the Loy Krathong Festival. The nearest MRT station is “Samyot” just an 800-meter walking distance.

Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, thus the exact date of the festival changes every year. In the Western calendar, this usually falls in the month of November.

Sometimes, you don’t need beaches or temples to enjoy Bangkok.
A simple visit to a local mall can turn into a fun and energetic experience. During one of my visits to The Mall Bangkapi, I discovered the vibrant Game Zone area — full of lights, sounds, and people enjoying arcade games. It reminded me that Bangkok entertainment is not just about nightlife or street markets, but also about simple indoor fun.

In a city known for dazzling skyscrapers and busy streets, sometimes the most meaningful experiences come from unexpected quiet corners. On one afternoon in Bangkok, I wandered into a place filled with vivid colors and deep spiritual energy — the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. Tucked away in the Bangkapi neighborhood, this Hindu temple stands as a testament to the Indian community’s cultural roots in Thailand, offering both spiritual calm and architectural beauty

14th Sep’19 / Saturday night I visited Hard Rock Cafe Bangkok, which is my favorite for good music and food. I have been coming here for the past 16 years. This cafe is very near to Siam BTS station.

Sometimes, the busiest cities hide the calmest green spaces. On a sunny morning in Bangkok, I found myself wandering into Train Park in Bangkok — a peaceful patch of grass framed by old locomotives and calm pathways, right in the heart of the city’s Bang Sue area. The contrast between the urban sounds outside and the gentle rustle of leaves inside the park reminded me why simple places like this become favorite stops for families, joggers, and anyone seeking a break.

Train Park isn’t just about trains — it’s about taking a breath in Bangkok’s urban rhythm.

In the heart of Bangkok’s urban rhythm lies a calm spiritual retreat that many visitors overlook. On a quiet evening stroll near the city’s busy districts, I found Wat Hua Lamphong Temple — a serene Buddhist temple where the energy shifted instantly from honking traffic to gentle temple bells and peaceful prayer spaces. This temple isn’t just a religious site; it’s a moment of quiet in Bangkok’s nonstop pace, and one of my favorite places to slow down and observe how local daily life merges with spirituality.
